Favorable review of Reform Jewish Pamphlets by Isaac Harby of Charleston, South Carolina, by the North American Review, the first literary magazine in the United States, founded in Boston in 1815 by Nathan Hale: “The Constitution of the Reformed Society of Israelites” (see Singerman 416) and “A Discourse, delivered...for promoting True Principles of Judaism according to its Purity and Spirit (see Singerman 418). Isaac Harby was the leader of the Reform movement in Charleston. Not only was the pamphlet “A Discourse” favorably reviewed, but Harby received letters about it from no less than Thomas Jefferson.
