THE BROKERAGE FIRM OF HAYM SALOMON AND JACOB MORDECAI OPENS FOR BUSINESS. On the fourth page of this Philadelphia newspaper are two advertisements of Haym Salomon, one in English and one in French. The Philadelphia patriot offers his services as stock broker, as well as licensed auctioneer in the city of New York. Mention is made of his contributions to the American Revolutionary War. Haym Salomon (1740-84), a native of Lissa (Prussian Poland), arrived in New York in 1775, penniless. However his success as stock-broker grew completely and his services were eventually sought by Robert Morris, recently appointed Superintendent of the Office of Finance (a pre-Constitution Secretary of the Treasury). Besides acting as Broker to the Office of Finance, Salomon was personally generous in advancing loans to patriots of the young republic, most notably James Madison. See. E. Wolf and M. Whiteman, The History of the Jews of Philadelphia from Colonial Times to the Age of Jackson (1957) pp. 98-113
