The Jewish Community of Ferrara began to organize its financial obligations towards the Duchy of the Principality through the levying of internal taxes from the beginning of the 16th-century. Tax regulations were published until the end of the 18th-century, which chart the economic challenges of Ferrara Jewry. In the present document, the role of the tax collectors ("tassatori") are clearly defined: They are to compel the taxpayer to swear upon a mezuzah that he will answer all questions honestly, after whcih a tax asessment is to be made for the individual concerned (pars. 12-14)
