In the aftermath of the French Revolution of 1789--and especially the emancipation of the Spanish-Portuguese Jews of Bordeaux, Bayonne and the Jews of the former papal province of Avignon and the Comtat Venaissin--the German (Aschkenazic) Jews of the Alsace region (of which Strasbourg was the provincial center) petitioned the French National Assembly for the rights of citizenship. With anti-Semitic overtones, the present tract repudiates these efforts.
