Kennicot’s edition is the earliest attempt to provide a systematic critical edition of the Bible on a large scale. For ten years, he engaged in this arduous task, during which time, he issued annual reports of the progress made. The final results were these two massive volumes that included a general dissertation, critical notes, a list of subscribers and an index.
