Kohn published this poem to commemorate the recovery of Arch-Duke Karl Ludwig, brother of Emperor Franz Joseph, following an assassination attempt. Years later, the successful assassination of Karl Ludwig’s son, Franz Ferdinand in 1914, has been pointed to as being the spark that led to the outbreak of World War I.
