Richard Brothers (1757-1824) was a self-styled prophet of the Jews of England. As there was some question as to Brother's mental competence, there was appended to his book of prophecies the work by a character witness, Mrs. S. Green, who evidently was a visionary in her own right. Brothers propounded the theory of Anglo-Israelism, the belief that the English are the descendants of the Lost Ten Tribes of Israel. Brothers styled himself as the “Nephew of the Almighty” as he considered himself descended from one of the brothers of Jesus and claimed he would be revealed as prince of the Hebrews and ruler of the world. Despite the fact that Brothers succeeded in attracting a following, he was commited to a mental asylum for the last thirty years of his life.
