Rabbi Jacob Joseph (1848-1902) was known in his native Lithuania as "R. Yankev Charif" of Zhager. In 1888, he left his position as Maggid of Vilna to assume the newly formed Chief Rabbinate of New York. Due to the tragedy of his experience at the hands of New York Jewry, he would be the first and the last "Rav Hakollel" - Chief Rabbi of New York. See EJ, Vol. X, cols. 221-22
