The English archeologist, cartographer and surveyor Claude Reignier Conder (1848-1910), was the British army officer in charge of the survey of Western Palestine on behalf of the Palestine Exporation Fund. In 1874 he was assisted by Horatio Herbert Kitchener (1850-1916), British Field Marshal and imperial administrator. Theirs was the first successful mapping of the entire region since Napoleon’s attempt, making this the first scientifically accurate map of the Holy Land. The Land is broken down into regions, each large sheet addressing a different area in great detail.
