A practicing physician, Max Nordau (1849-1923) was, together with Theodor Herzl, co-founder of the World Zionist Organization. Nordau served as vice-president of the First through the Sixth Zionist Congresses and as president of the Seventh to Tenth Congresses. See EJ, Vol. XII, cols. 1211-14 Die Conventionellen Lugen was the first of a series of works by Nordau in which he analyzed the mental and moral pathology of modern civilization.
