A most moving depiction of vibrant Jewish life before the Holocaust in such centers as Cracow, Vilna and Warsaw, Poland, as well as Munkacevo (Munkatch), Carpathian Ruthenia. The introductory essay by Dr. A.J. Heschel, in effect an elegy for vanquished East European Jewry, has become a classic. The 31 photos included in this volume were selected from the two thousand taken by Vishniac on the eve of the Holocaust in 1938. Roman Vishniac was born in St. Petersburg in 1898 and died in New York in 1990
