The writer was the grandson of his name-sake, the renowned R. Eliezer Papo, author of Pele Yoetz. Accordiing to Rivlin, Toldoth Chachmei Yerushalayim, Part III, p. 30, the family of the Pele Yoetz adopted the surname ibn Pele in order to lay claim to their illustrious ancester
