A fine copy of a “most chilling bibliophilic book.” Menachem Birnbaum (1893-1944) was the son of Nathan Birnbaum (1864-1937), an early secular Zionist leader, who later achieved renown as an ideologist of the ultra-Orthodox Agudath Israel movement. A native of Vienna, Menachem Birnbaum fled before the Nazis to Amsterdam. With the Nazi conquest of Holland, Birnbaum was deported to Auschwitz, where he perished. See A.J. Karp, From the Ends of the Earth: Judaic Treasures of the Library of Congress (1991), pp.128-130
