FIRST EDITION OF A FUNDAMENTAL Zionist Manifesto. AN EXTRAORDINARY COPY, INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY THEODOR HERZL. Provenance: The Gianfranco Moscati Collection, Naples, Italy. “Herzl’s Der Judenstaat has remained the single most important manifesto of modern Zionism and is one of the most important books in the history of the Jewish People.” See M. Heymann, Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana-Treasures of Jewish Booklore (1994), no. 46, pp.102-3 (illustrated). Arthur Schnitzler (1862-1931) was a successful Viennese playright and known to be a proud Jew. A shared interest in the theater brought Herzl and Schnitzler together from which grew a strong friendship. (See EJ, Vol. XIV, cols. 985-6).
