Leeser Bible with Fore-Edge Painting Based upon The Chagall Windows, Jerusalem.
Marc Chagall’s stained-glass windows were designed for the Synagogue at the Hadassah Medical Center, which was dedicated in Jerusalem in 1962. The windows represents the twelve sons of the Patriarch Jacob, who sired the Twelve Tribes of Israel. The fore-edge painting on the present volume is a semblance of one of the twelve windows - that of the tribe of Levi, whose name appears emblazoned at the top of this highly impressionistic painting.
A fore-edge painting, is a production whereby the fore-edge of a book is fanned out,and then held fast, so as to be decorated with a painted view. The painting remains concealed while the book is closed, fan out the edges and it reappears.
