Indenture: Sale of land holdings of Aaron Levy and his wife Rachel to Johann Henry Stevelie. Pennsylvania, 1787. On vellum. * 2) Indenture for sale of parcel of land: “On the Easterly side of the Bowery Road, being part of the Farm…”property of Hannah Jacobs, widow of Benjamin Jacobs, to Jeremiah Tier. New York, 4th April, 1823. [See Rosenbloom, p. 72, s.v. Jacobs, Benjamin III]. Witnessed by “Gompert S. Gomperts” [Rosenbloom, p. 46]. * 3) Shipping invoice signed by “Nathan Levy, Consul of the United States for this island,” Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands, 5th April, 1834. * 4-5) Plus two other documents from Philadelphia, 1858 and 1860.

Aaron Levy, born in Amsterdam in 1742, emigrated to America about 1760. He soon became a thriving merchant in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Active as a land agent, he established the town of Aaronsburg, Pennsylvania. During the Revolutionary War, Levy furnished supplies to the American troops and loaned money to the Continental Congress. Married to Rachel Phillips, Aaron Levy died in Philadelphia on January 23rd, 1815. See Rosenbloom, A Biographical Dictionary of Early American Jews (1960) p. 87. The present document records the legal transfer of “Ten Lots or Pieces of Ground Situate[d] in Town of Aaronsburgh in Penns. Valley in the County of Northumberland.”
