Meir ben Abraham Angel was born in Sofia, but emigrated to Safed as a youth. There, he studied under the great Safed kabbalists, including Samuel Uceda and Chaim Vital. Upon his return to his native Sofia he was appointed rabbi and preacher. His Mesoreth Ha’brith proved to be so popular the Author subsequently enlarged the work, publishing Mesoreth Ha’brith HaGadol (Mantua, 1622) - on 1,650 masoretic readings. See EJ, II col.951
