Baron Lipman Calmer arrived in Paris from Hanover, Germany 20 years befor the French Revolution. He was naturalized in 1769 under the reign of Louis XV. Upon making his fortune, he became the only French Jew to be raised to the nobility before the Revolution having acquired the Barony of Piquigny and Viscounty of Amiens in 1774. He died a pauper in 1784 having dissipated his fortune upon an unending lawsuit with the clergy. Two of his sons were executed under the Terror, but his daughter was saved from the guillotine. See L.
