De Fonseca's Hebrew press at Amsterdam was operative for only one year, during which time he printed only two Hebrew books. It remains unclear why de Fonseca engaged in Hebrew printing, particularly in light of his colleague, Menasseh ben Israel’s, pioneering and far more successful enterprise. See L. Fuks, Hebrew Typography in the Northern Netherlands 1585-1815, Part I (1984) pp.135-9
