Born in Lithuania, Levinthal came to the United States in 1891, settling in Philadelphia. An able organizer, he was responsible for the establishment of several Jewish institutions including the Central Talmud Torah and a municipal Va’ad Ha’kashruth, supervising ritual slaughter in Philadelphia. He was one of the founders of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada and served as its first president. His energy and wide range of interests enabled him to successfully represent the Orthodox point of view to the greater Jewish community. Contributors to this commemorative volume include Rabbis Joseph Dov Soloveitchik, Abraham Dov Ha’kohen Shapira and Abraham Isaac Kook
