Myer Moses (1779-1833) was born in Charleston, the son of one of the earliest Jewish settlers there. He fought during the war of 1812 and was honored for his defense of the city. He moved to New York in c. 1825, where he was an active member of the Tammany Society’, “an association that originated in patriotic feeling, and whose existence is equal with that period of our history which gave to us a permanent government, and a rank among the nations of the earth.”
