While no Jews were deported from Bulgaria proper to Nazi extermination camps, the Bulgarian regime, allied as it was with Germany, forcibly drafted Jewish men into labor battalions, collected a tax of 20% of Jews’ net-worth, and imposed other economically draining laws. The present text was an early attempt to rescind these laws as the war came to an end. Containing 20 ordinances that give weight to motive and geographic location, the Jewish community was apparently unimpressed. For despite having maintained its Jewish population through the war, nearly the entirety of Bulgaria’s 50,000 Jews would leave the country between 1945 and 1950.
