Atlantic City, New Jersey: World Jewish Congress 1944

Est: $500 - $700
<<A text foreshadowing a soon-apparent fact: America was now the new world-center of Jewry.>> The World Jewish Congress emergency meeting in Atlantic City, November 26-30, 1944, took place at an emotionally fraught period for World Jewry. On the one hand, an Allied victory was close at hand and assured, while at the same time, American Jews were beginning to grasp the magnitude of utter devastation wrought upon European Jewry by the Nazis. A number of noteworthy events took place at the conference. Rabbi Stephen S. Wise was elected president of the Congress, support was voiced for German reparations to be paid to the Jews of Palestine, and a commitment was made to raise $10,000,000 to assist Jewish refugees.
