Shipping receipt for goods transported on a Mordecai & Co. steamship. The owner, Moses Cohen Mordecai (1804-88), has been described as “the most prominent Jewish Charlestonian of the 1850s and 1860s.” Mordecai was also a member of South Carolina’s senate, aco-owner of the newspaper the Southern Standard and parnas in Charleston’s Congregation Beth Elo-him. Prior to the Civil War he opposed Secession, a position he changed one war broke out.
