Alfred Mordecai, Jr. (1840-1920) was the son of Alfred Mordecai, Sr. (1804-1887). The Mordecais were both Southerners and American military careerists trained at West Point. Mordecai, Sr. could not resolve his allegiance to the United States of America with his desire not to fight against the Confederate cause of which his entire family and network were aligned with, so he resigned his position in 1861. His son, who graduated West Point in 1861 (in the same class as Custer) did not however share this scruple and fought in the Civil War on the Union side. In 1865 was appointed instructor of ordnance and gunnery at the Military Academy, and eventually achieved the rank of Brigadier General.
