The author (d. 1798) was a disciple of the Maggid of Mehzritch and close with R. Pinchas of Koritz, R. Aharon of Karlin and many of the other great Tzadikim of that extraordinary place and time. Originally a wine merchant, R. Ze’ev Wolf was so inspired by Chassidism he left his trade to become a Maggid in his hometown of Zhitomir.
