R. Baruch Schik of Shklov (1744-1808) was a student of R. Elijah, the Ga’on of Vilna and translated numerous scientific and humanistic works into Hebrew on his behalf. He also printed and elaborated upon older Jewish texts of secular knowledge, such as the present work. Although a traditionalist, Schik’s work was greatly valued by the Berlin Maskilim. See D. Fishman, A Polish Rabbi Meets the Berlin Haskalah: The Case of R. Baruch Schik of Shklov, in: AJS Review 12:1 (1987) pp. 95-121.
