A most celebrated work, the Me’irath Einayim is an extensive exposition and elaboration on Choshen Mishpat, especially the glosses of the Rem’a. It is published in all editions of the Shulchan Aruch. Me’irath Einayim works as an intermediary between R. Joseph Karo and the Rem’a where disagreements arise. His purpose was to counter the numerous scholars who were content to base their opinions on the Shulchan Aruch alone without investigating the sources. At the same time, Me’irath Einayim greatly contributed in making the Shulchan Aruch an authoritative source of Jewish law in Ashkenazic lands. See M. Waxman, Vol. II, p. 158.
