The Frierdiker Rebbe took over his Chassidus at a time of great oppression against Judaism in the Soviet Union. Directing clandestine activities to strengthen Torah-life, in 1927 he was arrested and sentenced to death by the Soviet authorities. Due to international pressure he was subsequently released, upon which time he moved to the Latvian capital of Riga where he resumed his outreach activities. In 1940, after a remarkable escape from war-torn Poland, the Rebbe settled in the United States where he re-established the worldwide center of Chabad-Lubavitch at 770 Eastern Parkway in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, NY.
