Son of R. Moshe Greenwald (the Arugas HaBosem, 1853–1910), R. Ya’akov Yechezkiah Grunwald was the progenitor of the Pupa Chassidic dynasty. He served as rabbi in Tzehlem before being appointed to Pápa, Hungary, where he established an important yeshiva (which also had very close ties to Belz). He was succeeded by his son R. Yosef Greenwald (the Vayechi Yosef, 1903-84) as the charismatic leader of all Pupa Chasidim.
