Hebrew Poster, concerning the 1933 Ha’avara Agreement.

“Don’t worry Hitler! The Jews of Eretz Israel are Helping you. Here’s Another Transfer Order…” reads this scathing poster. Hitler sits with a bottle of liquor while a boorish Nazi hands him a document, as murdered victims of the regime swing from the gallows in the background. Edges chipped. 12 x 19 inches.

The Ha’avara Agreement was signed between Nazi Germany and the Zionistische Vereinigung für Deutschland on August 25, 1933. Until then, German Jews who emigrated were forced to leave behind all their assets. The new agreement allowed them to recoup these assets by transferring them to Palestine as German export goods, thus preventing their economic ruin. Some 60,000 German Jews moved to Palestine via this method. However the Agreement was seen by some as a violation of the boycott of Germany, and in effect, collaboration with the Nazi regime. This poster takes that perspective. Indeed, so upsetting was the message, that the word “transfer” is pasted over on this poster.
