Established in 1863, HaLevanon was the first Hebrew newspaper to be printed in Jerusalem. It was quickly followed by the release of Chavatzelet, which became its main competitor. While the primary audience of the newspaper were members of the Yishuv, HaLevanon opened branches in the Diaspora to provide them with news from Palestine. The newspaper had an avowedly traditionalist bent, and rejected the tendency towards modernization. Kevod HaLevanon was printed as a supplement to HaLevanon dedicated to publishing articles on Halachah and traditionalist polemics.
