In 1947, the Haganah organized the escape of 4500 Holocaust survivors from various detention camps in Allied-occupied Europe. Their objective was to smuggle these “illegal immigrants” into British-ruled Palestine. This volume, written in journal format, details the entire operation from the standpoint of the Haganah members who launched and directed it: From the boat’s departure in France to its arrival in the port of Haifa and its subsequent seizure by British authorities, which led to the return of the ship and the internment of its passengers in a detention camp in Hamburg, Germany. This concise volume chronicles the suffering and heroism of not only the 4500 Jewish refugees on board, but also the pivotal strategic and operational role played by members of the Haganah, who guided the entire operation and helped provide critical support in its aftermath. The work was surreptitiously published in Europe and sought to enhance the image of the Haganah as the prime driving force behind the Zionist cause.
