This historic Russian work was compiled in late 1944 by the prolific Soviet author Ilya Ehrenburg. It was a result of the efforts by members of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee to document the crimes of the Holocaust. However permission for publication was refused as the Russian government Central Committee deemed that a focus upon war-time Jewish suffering was anti-Soviet. Subsequently copies of Ehrenburg’s manuscript were surreptitiously sent abroad and a portion of it was published in Romania in 1946. See www.yivoencyclopedia.org/article.aspx/Black_Book.
