The principle disciple of the Vilna Gaon, R. Chaim Volozhiner was the acknowledged leader of the Mithnagdic Movement following the establishment of his Yeshiva in 1802. His writings were highly influential within the elite scholarly circles of Lithuanian Yeshivas. The editor, R. Yehoshua Heschel Lewin, was the son-in-law of R. Chaim Volozhiner’s grandson, and close to R. Israel Salanter. He authored Aliyoth Eliyahu, perhaps the most important work on the Vilna Gaon. See E. Katzman, Ledemuth Hagaon R. Yehoshua Heschel Lewin in: Yeshurun vol. V, pp. 742-82.
