The author (1795-1854) was the oldest son of R. Menachem Mendel of Kosov. He was maried to the celebrated Zipporah, renowned for her piety, of whom R. Yisroel of Rizhin was to proclaim “(she) is the most righteous person in the world" (see T. M. Rabinowicz, The Encyclopedia of Hasidism p. 164).
