The Protest against the Conservative Jews – the Original Postcards Handwritten by the Most Prominent Rabbis of the USA to the Union of Rabbis –[1935] In 1935, the Conservative Jews decided that during the wedding ceremony, the groom will give the bride authorization to write herself a Gett (divorce certificate) and to appoint an emissary to give it to her. The groom will also make a commitment not to annul the Gett and its delivery. During the years there had been many attempts to set various regulations in order to prevent such ideas/ rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinsky of Vilnius initiated in 1930 the publishing of the book "Ein Tnai Ba'Nissu'in", letters by the most prominent rabbis against such customs that undermine the holiness of Halachic marriage. In Elul 1935, the Union of Rabbis of the USA and Canada published the book "Le'Dor Acharon" about the affair. The book contains letters, articles and protests by the most prominent rabbis, Halachic leaders, who state loud and clear that a marriage cannot be conditioned. At the beginning of the book, it was printed: "The version of the protest and ban of the Union of Rabbis of the USA and Canada" on "anyone who dares break the law and change what the Sages have fixed during the Kiddushin". The protest was signed by dozen sof the rabbis of the USA. The signatures of these rabbis were received on empty postcards that had been sent to them by mail together with the version of the protest and the ban. These are those original postcards with the handwritten signatures if some of these rabbis. Each of these rabbis also added several lines about the important issue. . Among the rabbis who wrote the postcards before us: Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Shizgal, Rabbi Aryeh Leib Rodensky, Rabbi Ya'akov Meit Kahana Shapira, Rabbi Aryeh Leib Plotkin, Rabbi Shmaryahu Ha'Levi Horowitz, rabbi Nissan Tlushkin, Rabbi Yosef of Slutzk, Rabbi Moshe Yehuda Fisher and more. A total of 26 postcards handwritten and signed by the most prominent rabbis of the USA (a full list will be given upon request). . One of the postcards is the original postcard with the printed letter of Rabbi Yehuda Leib Zeltzer, who was the secretary of the Union of Rabbis, in which he asks each and every rabbi "to hurry and send his reply and his signed approval of the protest against the Conservative destroyers …" (Sivan, 1935). On this postcard itself, Rabbi Aryeh Leib Rodensky answered: "Please add my name to the above protest". Size of each postcard: 8x13cm.
