As a deeply troubled student, Charles (Chuck) Vernoff (1942-2013), actively sought out both psychiatric and spiritual advice in an attempt to come to terms with the existential problems which plagued him. Among the rabbis he consulted was Meshullam Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, one of the founders of the Jewish Renewal movement. In one of the letters here, Schachter-Shalomi, who achieved a level of notoriety for experimenting with "the sacramental value of LSD" suggests that Vernoff make the acquaintance of Timothy Leary in Cambridge, though admonishing him not to “take anything - yet.” Vernoff also corresponded with Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson during the same period (see next lot). Despite his excessive youthful angst, Vernoff went on to enjoy a successful 28 year career as a beloved professor of religion at Cornell University until his sudden death in 2013.
