The author signs himself as “Nesanel Mach of Bischheim, near Strasbourg” (see f. 18b) and references the Napoleonic Wars of 1814 “with a blessing for peace, this city should be captured from the Germans.” He wrote the manuscript in Alt-Breisach, in the house of Abraham Oppenheimer, son of the communal leader, Getz Oppenheimer (see top of f. 15a and bottom of 21a). The author clearly taught Talmud as he cites commentaries that were said”Lepilpul hatalmidim.” He also cites lengthy comments from “Raban shel kol Bnei Hagolah,” however the margin is frayed and the specific name is not discernible (see ff. 19a and 21b). Commentaries in the name of his teachers appear but unfortunately the margin on those leaves are frayed as well and only the phrase “Adoni Mori Verabi Hacharif…HaKollel…Luntschitz” can be seen (f. 8a). The author confidently takes issue with both R. Jonathan Eybeschuetz and his successor in Altona, R. Noach Tzvi Berlin (f. 9b) and on the whole, the novellae here are quite intricate in their scholarship.
