Shmuel Zanvill Segel (Samuel Levy) of Balbronn (1711-1802) was a prominent Jewish merchant from Alsace. This inventory of the printed volumes in his well-stocked library is neatly arranged in alphabetical order. Each entry records the title of the book, the number of volumes and/or copies, the place of printing and the book’s size. Running to nearly 300 volumes, printed in some twenty cities, Shmuel’s library ranged from early and scarce imprints from Venice and Constantinople to more contemporary offerings from the nearby presses of Northern Europe. (Further details accompanies the lot).
