This monumental series of views of ancient sites in the Near and Middle East created by Scottish artist David Roberts (1796-1864) was one of the most important and elaborate ventures of 19th-century publishing - the apotheosis of the tinted lithograph. Roberts published the results of his travels between 1842 and 1849 in six large format volumes, to much critical and popular acclaim. The success of the folio issue was sufficient to persuade Day & Son to take on the publication of the present quarto edition.
