HaZofeh “The State of Israel is Established - [long may it] Live!”

The newspaper of the global Mizrachi movement. Although independence had been proclaimed on Friday afternoon of May 14th, because no newspapers were printed on the Sabbath, the Sunday edition, dated May 16th was the first edition off the presses to proclaim the momentous news. Emblazoned along the upper margin is a quotation from Genesis (ch. 15): “On that day, The Lord made a covenant with Abraham, saying ‘your descendants will have this land…”. A portrait of Theodor Herzl, the founder of political Zionism also graces the front page. Both the quotation and the portrait are printed in the blue hue reminiscent of the new national flag.
