Compositional music scores for the Chazan and choir according to the custom and usage of the synagogue in Frankfurtam Main. The synagogue music contained in “Schire Jeschurun” are of a particular character distinct to those communities that adhere to the Frankfurt rite. “The melodies composed by the deeply pious I. M. Japhet (1818-92) became part of the spiritual treasury of many Orthodox German congregations.” See E.M. Klugman, Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch [A Biography] (1996) pp. 305-306. On the subject of the choir and other customs of German-Jewish synagogue life, see many of the essays by Rabbi Dr. Joseph Breuer, in: A Time to Builld (1995), especially pp. 18-20 and 40-45.
