The author of this uncommon work hailed from a small town near Vilna and served as Dayan of Varanovi. Clearly he was connected with both the Chassidic and Mithnagdic religious worlds, for most unusually he cites here both the Vilna Gaon as well as the Maggid of Mehzritch - providing each with lengthy honorifics: “HaMekubal HaGadol, Ish Eloki - in reference to the Maggid (see ff. 4a, 20b, 25b); and in reference to the Gaon: “HaGaon Ha’Amithi… Chasida Uperisha” (ff. 17b) and “Yireh Zera Veya’arich Yamav Veyemei Banav BeTorah VeGedulah ad Biath Hamashiach” (f. 24b). See M. Feikaz, Avoth HaChasiduth Bechibur Darshan Litai in: Molad Vol. 4 (1971) pp. 298-303.
