Advocating the creation of a homeland for the Jewish people in the the Land of Israel, “A Flag is Born” was produced to raise funds and political support for Zionist causes, specifically by the American League for a Free Palestine, an organization run by the dynamic activist Hillel Kook (a.k.a. Peter Bergson). In promoting the performance, the Bergson Group cleverly presented a playbill cover image in which three Zionist characters in blue - with rifle, hoe and “Israeli” flag - parallel three patriots of the American Revolution in red with fife and drums. The production starred a young Marlon Brando.
