From: Edward Wells. “A New Sett of Maps.” London. T.W. Bonwick, no. 34. The map shows the division among the Twelve Tribes and includes an inset of Syria in the upper left portion. Mathematician and geographer Edward Wells (1667-1727) taught at Christchurch, Oxford. He intended his atlas to be a teaching tool particularly for one of his students, the young William, Duke of Gloucester. Unfortunately, William died in 1700 at the age of 11. Wells dedicated the atlas, as well as many of the individual maps, to poor young William.
