The 16th-century Kabbalist Yisrael Sarug, was a disciple of R. Isaac Luria (the AR”I). At the death of his master, Sarug devoted himself to the propagation of the latter’s Kabbalistic system, for which he gained many adherents in various parts of Italy in particular. For example, R. Menachem Azariah of Fano (1548-1620), was first a follower of the Cordoveran system of Kabbalah, but under the influence of R. Israel Sarug, switched his allegiance to the Lurianic school.
