“Thank you very much for your articles in which your generosity of spirit… have responded so well to the shameless lies of Hugues le Roux. Thank you also for sending the cutting from the New York Times. The fine letter from Zola published this morning beautifully complement denials already published.” Hugues Le Roux was the pen name of the French writer and journalist Robert Charles Henri Le Roux (1860–1925), an active anti-Dreyfusard. Walter Littlefield (author of “The Truth About Dreyfus”) wrote in the New York Times, issue of the 4th May, 1902, an article stating that Le Roux had recently lectured before the students of the University of Chicago, the contents of which, Littlefield went on to prove, were baseless lies.
