Dr. Jacob Israel De Haan (1881-1924) Dutch-Jewish poet, lawyer and journalist, left a mixed legacy of personal and public positions. His political activity moved from involvement with the mainstream Zionist organizations in Palestine to a complete reversal and identification with the opposing Chareidi community of the Old Yishuv. He was assassinated upon orders of the Haganah for his anti-Zionist political activities and contacts with Arab leaders. De Haan is revered as a martyr within Chareidi circles and he was eulogized by R. Joseph Chaim Sonnenfeld who viewed De Haan as the first victim of Zionist political violence.
