By profession a mathematician, Marcus Nathan Adler (1837-1911) stemmed from an extraordinarily distinguished rabbinic family. His father was British Chief Rabbi Nathan Marcus Adler (1803-90) who in turn was succeeded by his younger son, Rabbi Hermann Adler (1839-1911).
